Jake Gaventa
Jake was born and raised in east Tennessee. He got his start in the construction industry early as a laborer at the age of 15. After finishing high school at a boarding school in New Hampshire, he continued to work as a carpenter. Appreciation of the American pioneer led him to build his first "house" at the age of 19. He harvested, milled, and built a 10'x15' cabin, mostly by himself. "There were a lot of mistakes," he remembers, "but I blame every one on the mosquitoes." After a few more years of working in the trades and traveling to Asia, Europe, and the American West, he decided it was time to continue his formal education. He attended Prescott College in Arizona and received two BA's, Environmental Studies and Adventure Education. After college the trades once again called, "I missed tangible creation." A broken truck on the way to Bozeman, Montana led him to Nederland. After a couple of years working on Custom Homes in the mountains, he decided it was time to try out the business for himself, "I've always loved a challenge."
Together with Andrew Dewart they created Juniper Associates. "I'm really enjoying the business now. I like new challenges and constantly refining techniques. I've come to measure success not just by the end product, but also the fluidity of the process." When asked what he sees next, he replies "I hope the rising fuel costs will help influence clients to want to build higher quality, more intentional homes." |
